The scientific framework — CCF Potential Index

Six site factors decide whether transition is realistic.

CCFPI combines terrain, soil and exposure variables into a single, explainable index for Irish Sitka spruce plantations. Each factor is standardised, weighted and reported separately so the reasoning behind a score can be inspected rather than assumed.

Slope

Ground gradient governs extraction feasibility and soil disturbance risk during repeated interventions.

Soil depth

Effective rooting depth determines anchorage in stems retained after canopy opening.

Soil quality

Nutrient status drives the vigour of natural regeneration beneath a partial canopy.

Soil texture

Texture controls aeration, drainage and trafficability across the working year.

Wind exposure

Windthrow hazard is the dominant limit on canopy opening in Irish plantation forests.

Aspect

Orientation shapes shelter and the light regime available to establishing regeneration.

CCFPI was developed through original Irish forestry and GIS research using spatial multi-criteria and fuzzy suitability analysis. The platform operationalises that model so the same reasoning can be applied consistently to any Irish Sitka spruce stand.
